A constant question that I always get asked is what skincare products do I recommend. As you know all my skincare is, and has been for a very long time, DIY, so without having tried and loved something I rarely have a firm answer to give. Occasionally I do test different skincare products but usually they fall short in comparison to the DIY mixtures I love so much! Every now and then though, I do find something in a package that I do love and can’t stop raving about.
The magic balm
One of my favourite DIY skincare ingredients is honey – all ingredients produced by bees have remarkable medicinal properties both on the skin and in the body. So when I heard about a balm called Egyptian Magic that contained numerous bee properties I just had to see if it would live up to my expectations!
That it did!
Supposedly formulated to a cream that was found in an ancient Egyptian tomb, this multi purpose balm contains just six natural ingredients and five of them are from bees.
Egyptian Magic contains Olive Oil, Beeswax, Honey, Bee Pollen, Royal Jelly Extract and Bee Propolis. Nothing else! No synthetic preservatives, fillers or fragrances added.
High in antioxidants, olive oil is used to moisturise and repair skin.
Secreted from their glands, bees use beeswax to build honeycomb. When applied to the skin, it acts as a great barrier cream to protect and lock in moisture.
Simply put, honey is regurgitated plant nectar that the bees deposit into honeycomb walls and fan until the watery nectar becomes a syrupy honey! The acidity and low water content combined with compounds and enzymes from both plant nectar and bees, gives honey it’s distinct anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. Quite simply amazing!
Touted as “natures most perfect food”, bee pollen is the pollen gathered from flowers that has been mixed with digestive juices from a working bee. As the bees re-enter a hive, the pollen that falls from their legs is collected. Extremely high in anti oxidants, protein, vitamins, minerals and energy, bee pollen is often used in anti-aging topical applications and to treat irritating skin conditions.
Royal jelly is a thick creamy fluid, secreted from a gland in the nursing bee’s head during digestion of bee pollen. All larvae are fed royal jelly for their first few days. If an ordinary bee continues to feed exclusively on royal jelly, she will become queen bee. With this being the only difference, queen bees grow 1 1/2 times larger and live 40 times longer than worker bees… fascinating! Royal jelly has been known to speed up the healing of wounds and to reduce the amount of scarring.
A resinous substance collected from plants, bees use propolis like a putty to seal up their hive. Abundant in flavonoids, propolis acts also to sterilize the hive and when applied to our skin offers anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic and anti-oxidant benefits.
For the past month I’ve been applying a small amount of Egyptian Magic to my face and body immediately after showering. Having combination skin means I’m typically dry but prone to the occasional pimple and I’ve found since using, my complexion is brighter and more balanced. It actually healed up a terrible irritation that broke out on my face after a little waxing experience a few weeks back – but I’ll save that story for another blog!!
Also, after a summer of thongs and barefeet my heels have been a little cracked, so after having a bath I applied it to the soles of my feet one night and slept wearing cotton socks. In the morning my feet were as soft as baby skin and have remained that way.
Other uses include:
Conditioning dry, split, frizzy hair ends
Calming an itchy, flaky scalp
Healing cuts, scratches and skin sores
Nail and cuticle repair cream
Reducing redness and healing blemishes
Soothing nappy rash on babies
Stretch mark prevention during pregnancy
Treating skin conditions that cause soreness and irritation
Where to find it?
I’ve yet to find Egyptian Magic in an Australian store but you can easily pick it up online from Australian health and beauty website Nourished Life or on Amazon. It comes in a handy 60ml or larger 118 ml tub and is great value with prices starting at just $24.95.
Definitely one to check out and I would love to hear if you love it as much as I do!
